UN Secretary-General António Guterres delivered a scathing address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, urging world leaders and corporate executives to step up efforts on climate action and regulation of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Speaking to an audience of political and business elites, Guterres warned of an “increasingly rudderless world” threatened by existential risks.
Climate Crisis: The Need for Immediate Action
Guterres likened humanity’s reliance on fossil fuels to Frankenstein’s monster, warning that it spares “nothing and no one.” He highlighted the paradox of climate inaction, noting that many of the world’s largest oil supertanker ports are at risk of being submerged by rising sea levels—a direct consequence of burning coal, oil, and gas.
Key points from his speech:
- Backtracking on climate commitments: Several financial institutions and industries have reversed course on previous pledges, which Guterres described as “short-sighted, selfish, and self-defeating.”
- Call for climate finance: Developing nations require a surge in climate funding to mitigate the effects of global warming and transition to sustainable energy.
- Preparing for COP30: Guterres reminded leaders of their promise to deliver updated, economy-wide climate action plans ahead of the UN Climate Conference in Brazil later this year.
“You are on the wrong side of history, the wrong side of science, and the wrong side of consumers who are demanding sustainability,” he told the audience.
The Dual-Edged Sword of Artificial Intelligence
While recognizing AI’s transformative potential, Guterres warned of the risks it poses when left unregulated:
- Benefits of AI: AI is revolutionizing fields such as education, healthcare, agriculture, and humanitarian aid.
- Risks of unregulated AI: Without proper governance, AI can disrupt economies, deepen inequalities, and erode trust in institutions.
Guterres emphasized the importance of the Global Digital Compact, a framework adopted as part of the UN’s Pact for the Future, which outlines principles for ensuring AI and digital technologies serve humanity equitably.
Reforming Global Governance
The Secretary-General also called for reform of global institutions, including the UN Security Council and the global financial architecture, which he said are ill-equipped to address modern challenges.
Key reforms proposed:
- Strengthening governance systems to address climate change, technological advancements, and inequality.
- Implementing the commitments made at the Summit of the Future to improve global collaboration and accountability.
Despite his urgent calls for action, Guterres expressed doubt about the political will of world leaders, stating, “I am not convinced leaders get it.”
A Call for Unity
Guterres concluded by urging the global community to embrace the theme of the Davos forum, “Collaboration for the Intelligent Age,” by taking bold, unified steps to address the world’s most pressing issues.
“Stay on the right side of history,” he appealed to governments and businesses, emphasizing the need for collective action to confront these existential challenges.
